Men 1 v Italy

Leslie reports from Moscow:

"Against Italy's Joel Retornaz David took his one in the first end before Retornaz drew for a pair in the second. The Scots blanked the third before Italy gave away the next four ends 1 - 2 - 1 - 1 to be 6-2 back with three ends to play.

Retornaz took his single with a draw in the eighth and then had the first of two steals of single shots in the ninth when David, going for a four shot count got too little of the Italian shot stone with his angled takeout, leaving Italy lying a single. In the tenth, the Scots kept the Italians to the minimum of one shot for a 6-5 opening win.

It was a job done but as David admitted afterwards, "We should have killed the game in the ninth end."

In opening round surprises, Sweden's Niklas Edin went down to Germany's Johnny Jahr whilst Norway's Thomas Ulsrud was led a merry dance by Latvia who at one time were 7-2 in front."
