Curling this weekend

The World Junior Championships begin at the Dewar's Centre in Perth this weekend. Skip Cottage Curling will be on site! The official website is here.

The Scottish Masters Championships are underway at Greenacres. You can find all the results here.

The Rink Championships are at the Galleon, Kilmarnock, see here.

If you are looking for something completely different, if not unique, you should get to Lockerbie on Saturday. The rink is hosting the Virtual Club Bonspiel. Twelve teams from six virtual curling clubs - Murrayfield, Stirling, Borders, Kinross, Fife, Braehead and Lockerbie - will compete in two Shenkels, playing three four end games.

Never heard of 'virtual curling clubs'? Judith McFarlane, the Royal Club's Development Manager (Club and Juniors) explains it all here. I think it is a great concept, giving opportunity to those attending 'come and try' and coaching sessions, enjoying that experience, and wondering how to get involved further in the sport. Former Development Manager Gordie Kennedy should get the credit for the idea, and Judith, when she was ACDO at Braehead, helped set up the first virtual club in that rink. This is the third year that the bonspiel has taken place following successful competitions at Stirling and Kinross.

Judith notes that the Virtual Curling Club concept is continually being developed as new ideas are taken on board.

Marion Murdoch is organising this year's event at Lockerbie. She says, "I hope that all the teams will enjoy curling away from their home rink, improving their game and meeting new people." Prizes will be from Ailsa Craig Jewellery, and Lockerbie Ice Rink.
